SPOKANE COUNTY UNITED WAY WORKS TO DECREASE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT.
Spokane County United Way is focused on the negative impact of domestic violence, and child abuse and neglect. We know that our rates of child abuse and neglect are nearly double the state average with 5,650 verified victims in 2018. When a child experiences trauma - physical or emotional abuse, illicit drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, and others - this is known as Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs. Children and adults with multiple ACEs have a greater likelihood to live in poverty and have higher levels of addictive and risky health related behaviors.
Our Goal
Because our rate of domestic violence and child abuse and neglect are greater than the statewide averages, our goal is to decrease the number of victims of abuse and neglect in Spokane County.
Our Strategy
Our efforts bring early intervention and support for vulnerable families to prevent and mitigate the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), to provide access to mental health and substance abuse services when it is part of an intentional and coordinated strategy to keep children nurtured and safe, and to ensure safe environments and support for families fleeing domestic violence situations. Our approach reaches families dealing with multi-trauma scenarios, brings together local partners for focused efforts, brings best practices into our community and national funding, and creates collaborative relationships to create change.
