Building a Stronger Community Together
Grant Requests
Spokane County United Way is proud to administer the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funding, a vital federal resource provided through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This funding is designed to support local agencies in purchasing food and shelter to supplement and expand their existing resources, ensuring that emergency needs are met efficiently and effectively.
Despite the availability of various support programs, gaps still exist in providing sufficient emergency food and shelter services to all in need. Limited funding and resources often leave vulnerable populations without the necessary support during crises, exacerbating issues of hunger and homelessness.
Supplementary Funding
EFSP funds are designated to supplement and expand existing food and shelter programs, ensuring additional resources are available to meet emergency needs without disrupting current services.
Eligibility and Compliance
Nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and government entities can apply for EFSP funding. To receive funds, organizations must resolve any compliance issues to ensure accountability and effective resource use.
Application Process
Organizations interested in funding must submit applications to the Local Board. Requirements include having a DUNS number, FEIN, a checking account for EFSP deposits, paying vendors within 90 days, and submitting required reports.
Example of Impact
A local nonprofit used EFSP funding to purchase additional beds and supplies, allowing them to accommodate more people during winter, providing safe shelter and avoiding harsh conditions.
Long-Term Impact
EFSP funding builds community resilience by addressing immediate food and shelter needs during emergencies, contributing to long-term stability and reducing strain on resources.
Sustainable Funding
Securing federal EFSP funds provides reliable support for local agencies, strategically allocated to address the community's most pressing needs.
Capacity Building
We invest in local organizations by providing resources to expand services, ensuring compliance with federal requirements, and fostering collaboration among service providers. The grant process is transparent, with rigorous oversight and regular compliance checks to maintain program integrity.
