Capacity Building

United Way of Spokane County has a long-standing tradition of fostering community well-being through collaborative efforts and targeted interventions. Our various fundraising initiatives, including workplace campaigns, play a crucial role in rallying support from local businesses, individuals, and community groups committed to making a difference. Through these efforts, we raise funds and awareness to address critical disparities in our community, particularly in education, financial stability, and health.

United Way of Spokanes impact

Despite the overall prosperity of Spokane County, significant disparities persist, affecting the quality of life for many residents.

These disparities are evident in:

  • Education: Achievement gaps among students from different socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Financial Stability: High rates of poverty and unemployment in certain areas.

  • Health: Limited access to healthcare services for underprivileged populations.

  • Basic Needs: Food insecurity and lack of affordable housing.

Our Approach to Solving the Problem

United Way of Spokane County employs a multifaceted approach to tackle these issues:

  • Collaborative Partnerships: We work with local nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, and community groups to pool resources and expertise.

  • Targeted Programs: Initiatives like after-school tutoring, job training, and health clinics are tailored to meet specific community needs.

  • Advocacy: We advocate for policy changes that address root causes of disparities and promote systemic change.

  • Volunteering: Engaging community members through volunteering opportunities that foster a sense of involvement and ownership.

The Impact

One of our impactful programs is spearheaded by Communities in Schools, focusing on improving student attendance and engagement. A team member shared a story of a student who struggled with attendance, missing about 60 days of school last year despite various efforts to encourage regular attendance. This year, they set a goal to improve his attendance through an attendance sticker chart to help him earn prizes. Every morning, the student eagerly visits the office to put his sticker on the chart, and then he is walked to class. He has only missed one day of school this year and proudly boasts the most stickers. His improved attendance has boosted his self-esteem and determination to succeed in school.

The impact of our programs is vividly illustrated through stories like that of the student whose attendance was transformed by Communities in Schools. These examples highlight the profound difference that targeted support and community engagement can make in individual lives. By addressing educational challenges and providing therapeutic support, we foster environments where individuals can thrive. Our commitment to sustainable change ensures that these success stories are not isolated incidents but part of a broader effort to create a vibrant, equitable community in Spokane County.

Investment Strategy/Capacity Building Grants

To maximize the impact of our initiatives, United Way of Spokane County employs a strategic investment approach:

  • Data-Driven Decisions: We use local data and research to identify the most pressing needs and allocate resources effectively.

  • Capacity Building Grants: These grants are designed to strengthen local nonprofits by enhancing their operational capabilities, ensuring they can deliver services more efficiently and effectively.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation: We continually assess the effectiveness of our programs and make adjustments as needed to ensure optimal outcomes.

United Way of Spokane County is committed to creating a vibrant, equitable community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Through our fundraising efforts and collaborative partnerships, we address critical disparities and foster long-term, sustainable change. By investing in our community's potential, we ensure a brighter future for all.

Together, we can make Spokane County a place where everyone thrives. Join us in this mission and be a part of the positive change.
