Following an extensive career of nonprofit service, in the spring of 2021 Tim Henkel announced his plan to retire at the end of the 2021 giving campaign. During his 39 years with United Way he has worked at three different locations across the country. He has led Spokane County United Way since August of 2007.
Henkel began his career as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) member. This volunteerism framed his life-long service in the nonprofit community. In fact, to this day if you ask him, he still has his work boots he purchased and wore while serving as a VISTA. Henkel said, "the boots reflect a time in my life when I struggled to make ends meet and they are a reminder for me to continue to lead and serve in a way that puts people first."
During Henkel's time in Spokane, he built strong collaborations between the nonprofit and for-profit communities. In the last 10 years alone, under Tim's leadership, over $20 million dollars has been granted to local nonprofit organizations supporting the health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community.
Tim plans to continue to call Spokane home in his retirement.
Tim Henkel is Retiring. Thank you for your gift to honor his long time service for our community.
